Teaching Experience

My teaching and training experience spans more than 20 years. In my career as a Chief Information Security Officer, Data Center Manager, and an Information Technology Security Engineer, I taught a variety of topics related to networking, software, computer security, and disaster recovery. After retiring from the State of California, I began teaching English in Japan. I have over five years of teaching English as a second language to students from 2 years old up to retirement age. I taught classes based on specific textbooks and classes using my own lesson plans that focused on conversation, vocabulary, and grammar.

2018-Present College of Naka-Nippon Aviation Ground Staff Department - English Conversation, Vocabulary, and Grammar Courses: I teach vocabulary, grammar, and conversation classes four times each week for the first year Ground Staff students. Classes are 90 minutes in length and cover specific topics related to the airline industry and customer service.
2018-Present Kawai Kindergarten Nenchuu/Nenchou - After School English Classes: I teach kindergarten students ages 3 to 5 using the Apricot Publishing Ice Cream Series Vanilla and Strawberry Books. In Vanilla classes I focus on the alphabet, numbers, and other vocabulary leading into phonics and grammar. In Strawberry classes, the focus is on phonics, spelling, conversation, and pronunciation.

Grades 1 through 6 - After School English Classes: These students are aged 4 to 12 and I use the Pearson Hip Hip Hooray textbooks and workbooks. Classes focus on learning grammar, vocabulary, and continuing phonics, spelling, conversation.
2018-Present Sakura Kids School Pre-School - Mommy and Kid Classes: Using the Penguin Random House Step Ahead Series, I teach pre-school students along with a parent or guardian as they learn shapes, colors, drawing lines, numbers, and letters. Classes include singing, dancing, physical activity, and worksheets along with English listening and speaking.

Nenchuu/Nenchou - After School English Classes: I teach kindergarten students ages 3 to 5 using the Apricot Publishing Ice Cream Series Vanilla and Strawberry Books. In Vanilla classes I focus on the alphabet, numbers, and other vocabulary leading into phonics and grammar. In Strawberry classes, the focus is on phonics, spelling, conversation, and pronunciation.

Grades 7 through 9 - After School English Classes: These students are aged 12 to 15 and I use the Pearson Hip Hip Hooray textbooks and workbooks. Classes focus on learning grammar, vocabulary, and continuing phonics, spelling, conversation.

Grades 10 through 12 - After School English Classes: These students are aged 16 to 18 and I use the Cambridge University Press Connect Series as well as the Pearson Hip Hip Hooray textbooks and workbooks. Classes focus on learning grammar, vocabulary, and continuing phonics, spelling, conversation.

Adults - English Classes: These students are older but do include some high school students. I primarily use the Pearson Top Notch Series of textbooks and workbooks but also include the Pearson Hip Hip Hooray textbooks and workbooks. Classes focus on individual requirements including grammar, vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation, conversation, and listening.
2018-2022 College of Naka-Nippon Aviation Engineering Department - Grade 3: This class was for the advanced English students. I used a variety of books, worksheets, listening, and conversation lessons.

Semester 1: Following the syllabus, I taught the Best Practice for the TOEIC Listening and Reading Test (Revised Edition) book by Seibido Publishing. This book is geared toward preparing for the TOEIC test. Each 90 minute class covered one unit of the textbook.

Semester 2: Intermixed with the Semester 1 textbook, I taught the TOEIC テスト 中学英文法で600点! book by ALC Press. This book is designed to help the student achieve a score of 600 or more on the TOEIC test. Each 90 minute class concentrated on units 5 through 8 of the textbook.

2018-2022 College of Naka-Nippon Aviation Engineering Department - Grade 1: This class was for the advanced English students. I used a variety of books, worksheets, listening, and conversation lessons.

Semester 1: I taught the Best Practice for the TOEIC L&R Test Basic book by Seibido Publishing. This book is geared toward preparing for the TOEIC test. Each 90 minute class covered one unit of the textbook.

Semester 2: Intermixed with the Semester 1 textbook, I taught the TOEIC Bridge book by IIBC. This book is used to help students understand the new TOEIC Bridge Tests. Each 90 minute class covered a specific section of the textbook.

2018-2021 College of Naka-Nippon Aviation Engineering Department - Grade 3: This class was for the advanced English students. I used a variety of books, worksheets, listening, and conversation lessons.

Semester 1 & 2: Using the approved syllabus, I taught the Start-Up Course for the TOEIC L&R Test book by Seibido Publishing. This book was used to help the students prepare for the new format TOEIC test. Each 90 minute class covered one unit of the textbook.

2016 United States Air Force Association CyberPatriot Technical Mentor: This program was created to inspire K-12 students to consider careers in cybersecurity or other STEM fields. I taught 8 high school students at Grandview High School about cybersecurity and how to manage a network for a small imaginary company. Through a series of lessons and competitions, teams of students worked on finding and fixing cybersecurity vulnerabilities while maintaining the network.
2012-2014 California Department of Public Health Acting Chief Information Security Officer: I wrote the IT security policies for the department and provided employee training on the policies. Additionally, I taught a monthly IT security awareness class for employees who required re-training on proper technology use in the agency. I also created a yearly security awareness conference where my staff and I taught various topics within the cybersecurity field for other agency, departments, and councils to help them with their own cybersecurity issues.
2014 United States Air Force Association CyberPatriot Technical Mentor: This program was created to inspire K-12 students to consider careers in cybersecurity or other STEM fields. I taught 14 high school students at Highlands High School about cybersecurity and how to manage a network for a small imaginary company. Through a series of lessons and competitions, teams of students worked on finding and fixing cybersecurity vulnerabilities while maintaining the network.
2008-2012 California Office of Legislative Counsel / Legislative Data Center Acting Chief Information Security Officer: I wrote and maintained the agency IT security policies and trained employees and elected officials on cybersecurity awareness. I also trained personnel on the proper use of the computer forensic equipment.
2007-2008 California Department of Technology Services Senior Information Security Engineer: I was the project manager for the Secure File Transport project. I wrote, implemented, and maintained the usage manual and policies. I also trained customers on how to setup and use the service.
2006-2007 California State Controller's Office Chief Information Security Officer: I wrote, implemented, and maintained information technology security policies and trained elected government officials on cybersecurity awareness, policy compliance, and best practices. I started the cybersecurity training and education program and presented classes on a regular basis covering topics from recognizing spam emails to technical demonstrations of how to use the cybersecurity hardware and software.
2000-2006 California Department of Technology Services Senior Information Security Engineer: I wrote IT security policies, procedures, and guidelines. I taught monthly classes on the latest cybersecurity threats and the proper use of the security hardware and software for end-users. I created and managed the first IT Security Awareness Conference for the State of California. I taught classes and seminars on California law compliance, agency policies, and how to write policies. I also did hands-on technical demonstrations of security hardware and software in use as well as demonstrations of computer hacking to show how easy it was for bad actors to gain access to confidential information.
1997-2000 SAFE Credit Union Data Center Manager: I managed and maintained the Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity programs and taught branch personnel how to use the computer equipment during a disaster. I also taught my technical staff how to implement and maintain the computer systems during a disaster event.
